I SURVIVED REAL ESTATE
Industry insiders focus on what’s ahead for 2022-2023
The Norris Group’s annual award-winning event, I Survived Real Estate is back, LIVE! Our 15th annual black-tie gala that benefits Make-A-Wish and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will continue at the Nixon Presidential Library. Since 2008, together we’ve raised over $1,000,000 for charity!
Record inflation, high housing demand, steep interest rate increases, national affordability challenges, global supply chain disruption, a pandemic reshuffle, and a dangerous war are just some of the headwinds we face as an industry and a nation. What has forever changed and what will remain constant? Are we headed for a crash, a slowdown, or another record-breaking year despite black swans looming in the background? We’ve assembled some of the brightest minds to help us tackle topics we never thought we’d have to consider and how they might impact real estate.
Our network will want to pay special attention to The Norris Group Radio Show and Podcast as we will be doing pre-event shows featuring local experts as well as national leaders. There’s a lot at stake in 2022 for real estate investors. I Survived Real Estate was created during a year in crisis and our mission continues to bring thought leaders together for a great cause while preparing our industry for the year ahead.

Dr. Amar Gajjar Our mission is local and global. We are constantly developing new therapies for rare pediatric cancer and we share our information globally. We go to individual hospitals. We share our knowledge. I think this kind of victories teaches you that you’re part of a much larger mission on this earth and that’s the hallmark of St. Jude.
Bruce Norris This is a quote at St. Jude’s website “Regardless of the duration or the cost of care. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatments, travel, housing or food so they can focus on helping their child live.” It just doesn’t get better than that. Odette Gutierrez is here from St. Jude. Where are you? Oh, there you are.
Odette Gutierrez Good evening. Good evening, since 2015, I’ve had the honor of attending I Survived Real Estate as a representative of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and had the great privilege of meeting Aaron. His gift to pour his heart, talent, and work to help others was inspirational to say the least. Danny Thomas, the founder of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital define success in these words “Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.” Not only was Aaron successful in his professional life, but he was extremely successful in accomplishing one of life’s most important purpose to give back to others. To every one of you. Thank you. Thank you for supporting the children of St. Jude, to join, to Joey and The Norris Group. Thank you for your hard work in putting together this amazing event. And to Bruce. Thank you for sharing your amazing son with a world and for your continued support for this amazing mission. Together your support brings hope to children here and around the world so they can accomplish their dreams and one day leave a mark on this world just like Aaron did. Thank you. Thank you.
Make-A-Wish It makes you forget about the bad times and Make-A-Wish Foundation helped give her the hope that we couldn’t. Make-A-Wish has been a really cool part of our journey. Thank you for everything you do for all these kids. Should definitely help other kids have their wish come true. It really makes an impact. I’ll always have those moments to remind myself of all the amazing things that life has to offer. What Make-A-Wish does to me is out of this world.
Bruce Norris Please welcome Gloria Crockett.
Gloria Crockett Well, good evening, everyone. I’m Gloria Crockett. I’m the president and CEO of Make-A-Wish and one thing I want to take away from today is say yes, that was huge. When you talk about saying, yes, that’s so important in what we do. And we are giving back to the community by helping St. Jude’s, helping Make-A-Wish. We’re doing amazing things. I have to say, I was blessed three and a half years ago, to have met Aaron. And it was when I first joined to Make-A-Wish. And I have to say it’s one of the most remarkable experiences that I’ve had over the years. And even though it was only three and a half years, I’ve been touched in so many ways, as all of you have. And so I want to make sure that I share with the Norris group Bruce, Joey, in honor of Aaron Norris, a legacy of wishes. Aaron was truly a passionate and dedicated Make A Wish partner and community leader who knew that there are very few experiences more powerful than making a wish come true. Thanks to Aaron’s amazing generosity and support, wish kids and their families have been able to experience life changing wishes, such as meeting their favorite football team, playing with their favorite animals at the zoo, and traveling across the world. We are forever grateful to Aaron and his legacy of wishes. Will live on in the hearts of so many wish kids and their families that were impacted by his generosity. And I just want to say thank you to Bruce, Joey, and of course, Aaron for all that he’s done. So, I want to start with giving this so that was an added of course piece. Because we miss Aaron so much. Each year Make-A-Wish provides wishes to kids that are battling a critical illness. And these kids need a wish to be part of their their treatment. And very much like some of the children that are being treated at St. Jude’s a wish provides inspiration. And when we did a recent impact study, what it showed is Doctor said when a kid receives a wish or knows that they’re going to receive a wish, they have become more compliant with their treatment. A family, all family members also say when a kid receives a wish or their child receives a wish that it brings the family closer together. It makes them feel united again, because you know what they’re in and out of hospitals, they have so many things that they’re doing. And they’re grateful for having that opportunity to have a wish. So, each year all of you adopt a wish for Make-A-Wish. And this year’s wish is going to Liberty. Liberty suffers from epilepsy. And her wish was to have an accessible swing. And this was actually installed in a park and La Quinta which is absolutely amazing. And I want you, to tell you this that the city of La Quinta has decided to possibly put these in every single park in that community. And I think that’s just awesome. I want to tell you guys one last thing when Liberty, it’s nonverbal, but I think that all of you and especially Aaron would appreciate this. When she got in her swing, what she did is she said, “I just love you.” And it was the most beautiful thing and I want you guys to remember that when you’re thinking about making wishes come true. You’re helping a wish like Liberty. So thank you guys very much.
Bruce Norris I guess I’d better check the watch and see, I have no idea if we’re remotely on time or not, but I don’t think I care. I don’t care. Okay, where are we? In 1981, I was forced to go to a seminar by the owner of the company, I have never, never been to a seminar and never had wanted to go to one. But I had no choice. And it was Jim Rohn seminar. I asked how long it was. And he said, the owner said three hours I said, that’s like six sermons, man. I don’t know. I don’t know how I’m gonna make it. And we’re where we sit, it we were seated right in the front. I just saw. So I sat there and in about five minutes, I made my first note and the note I still have in the book. I was there that night, because it changed my whole life. And I said, this doesn’t this man does not need anything from us. I really, as a speaker, a lot of times you look for agendas. You know, what’s the agenda? I couldn’t find one. I could not find one. And I thought this is a special guy. Why is he here? And he told a story and I got it. I got why was here. And he was he told a story that he was not doing well, when he was broke at a Girl Scout knocked on his door to selling girl scout cookies for two bucks. And she was really good at it. And he really wanted to buy them. But he didn’t have two bucks. He was 25 years old. So he did the second best thing in his mind at the time he lied to her. And he said, Oh, you just missed the other Girl Scout Cookie girl came and I bought 10 boxes. I’m all I’m all good on that. And when he closed the door, he’s he slumped to the floor and cried. And then he got mad. And he said you don’t want I’m not going to live like this anymore. And I just thought, Okay, you got me, pal. And I took notes. And I stayed up all night. Never had written a goal in my life. I didn’t do, I never heard of that word. I wrote goals. And I got I got really passionate about doing and eight years later, I chased him down. And I showed him my list of goals. And I said thank you. Because that was, that was a big deal. When Rohny when Jim Rohn passed, we called up his foundation as I asked could we do. Honor Jim Rohn with with a plaque or trophy. And because he has such an impact. And we created as the award called the Rohny Award. And it’s for teachers that are just like him, that there’s something about the way they teach this completely selfless. They don’t need anything from anybody. And their reputation is awesome. And it’s, it was interesting. I just interviewed John Schaub. And I found out two things this week. I didn’t really know about John Schaub, one is I listened to Aaron in a video, you know, you know, one of his real estate heroes is John Shaw. He said that in a video and I was very interested in you know why? Because his dad flipped all these houses and was very busy business and John Schaub said you just need to buy one at a time. Like one a year would be fine. And it was like, yeah, I can relate to that. And that was that was pretty cool. So, everyone that’s gotten these awards really has a spotless reputation, and it’s helped so many people. We lost two of the recipients this year. Nick Blackwell, Nick Blackwell was very instrumental in Mike Cantu’s success. And of course Mike has been instrumental in a lot of other people’s success. So, that’s kind of how it goes. Jack Fortune happened to be in Jim Roans audience tonight. I was there. We didn’t know that until years later. And he was intrumental and getting me to speak for the first time about real estate. And he was also instrumental and finally convinced me to hold some properties for rentals, instead of flipping everything, Bruce. So, tonight, we’re going to honor one of the great teachers, but now he’s no longer here. name is Jack Miller. Jack Miller, I went took one class from him and how many people are familiar with Jack Miller’s teaching? Okay, so you’re gonna enjoy the story. I needed to go there because it was an option class. And I had a chance to buy 50 building lots that I couldn’t pay for. So I wonder how to do an option. And so I was there. This was one of my first real estate seminars. And I opened the book, pen poised. And he started talking. And it wasn’t page one that he was talking about. And it didn’t follow that he talked about page two or page three. I never turned a page in the book, because he never followed the book. And I thought, Wow, that’s crazy. Well, Mike Cantu filled me in a couple years later, he says I love going. I love going to his seminars, because there’s two, there’s two seminars, the one that’s in the book, and the one that you hear. Now, can you, can you imagine that? You know, you know, a subject so well then you could add limit for a whole day. Okay, that’s impressive. So that’s the gentleman that that we’re going to honor tonight, and you’re going to hear from some of the people that he’s he’s made an impact on right now.
Bill Cook I folks, my name is Bill Cook. Jack Miller is so deserving of the Rohny award.
Jack Easton Hi, this is Jack Easton. And if it were at all possible, I would be there cheering for Jack Miller.
Peter Fortunato Hi, I’m Pete Fortunato. Thank you so very much for recognizing Jack Miller with Rohny Award in 2022. There has never been a more deserving of this award.
John Schaub Jack Miller and I were real estate brokers who liked buying better than selling. We taught the first national seminar on investing in houses called making a big little deals in 1975. For the next four decades, we helped 1000s to see how investing in houses was a path to wealth.
David Tilney I’m David Tilley, Jack Miller was my friend and he was my main real estate man.
Bill Cook Jack Miller taught all of us, what’s possible as creative dealmakers
John Schaub Jack love to teach and help others. He was never happier than when he was before an audience of his many loyal students.
Peter Fortunato Jack taught inspires so many people. He taught us, shamed us when needed. He listened to us.
Jack Easton He was more than just a seminar leader and a teacher of for business.
Bill Cook Jack Miller over the years, been my universe forever. Jack was a single greatest mentor in my entire life. It wasn’t just about real estate and business. It was life in general.
Jack Easton But Jack taught us about right and wrong and good and bad.
David Tilney Jack was so far ahead of his time, involving real estate but in so much more. He was a musician. He was a poet. He read everything he could get his hands on he loved to travel.
Bill Cook To me. He was the Johnny Carson of late night real estate. He was hysterical, the way he would deliver his messages. I still laugh today.
John Schaub Jack was truly one of the funniest people I’ve ever met him reinvent himself, write new seminars on new topics, whatever the, whatever he felt the needs of his students were he would become an expert in whatever that need was and create a seminar around it.
Bill Cook I think about Jack often in the lessons that he taught me
David Tilney Jack said, develop true financial friend develop multiple income streams for financial safety
Jack Easton Whenever you called. He never said oh, I’ve got another call or I gotta go or some reason on the table. You were a friend. You deserve this one, Jack. Thanks, buddy.
John Schaub And we were blessed to have Jack in our lives. And but he will be missed and his legacy will live on forever. to Jack will love you, Jack.
Peter Fortunato Thank you for honoring Jack. And thank you Jack for your friendship, your inspiration, and your help.
John Schaub You like closing the class with his rendition of the difference between an Eagles life and out of an Oyster. Oyster lives a safe life on the bottom of the ocean, getting all they need to eat by just opening their mouths while an eagle asked to go out every day and hunt for their meal. But an eagle has a lot more freedom and a lot better view. Thanks Jack for teaching us to soar like eagles.
Jack Easton He really was the greatest influence in my life. Well, what more can I say than that?
David Tilney And you also liked red wine. So, with that in mind, let me just propose a toast to my dear departed friend Jack Miller.
Bruce Norris And we are going to present, were gonna present the Rohny award for Jack Miller to Pete Fortunato. And it weighs about 20 pounds, so. Well, you already have one so you know what that weighs? Thank you very much.
Peter Fortunato Thank you. Yeah, I don’t know why I can say except thank you. Jack is a wonderful, wonderful man who made a difference in so many lives. He’s the perfect person to receive this award and thank you all very, very much from his family. I can’t wait to sit with them and give them this to keep forever. Thank you.
Bruce Norris Thank you. Okay.
